Emma Mareroa, Senior People & Culture Advisor, oversees much of the operational HR activity, everything from contracts and policies to performance and employee benefits and everyday queries.
We caught up with Emma recently, who shared some insights into how Employment Hero made all the difference, streamlining and automating things for TMNZ.
Closing the books on clunky processes
Before adopting Employment Hero, Emma says the HR team relied mostly on a manual system for HR tasks.
“It meant taking a Word document contract, making the necessary changes for each person, and then saving PDF copies in individual folders,” she shared. “The same went for offer letters – manually tweaking documents every time we needed them.”
The lack of integration between tools, such as a standalone performance system that didn’t connect to employee records, made it difficult to maintain a single source of truth for each team member. This fragmented setup was time-consuming and made scaling increasingly tough. The experience was also clunky for employees.
Emma says she knew the business needed a better solution, so she set about doing some research.

“It only takes me 5 minutes to generate a contract now,” Emma shared. “It’s saved me a couple of hours a month on just this one task alone, which will really add up over time.”

Compliance tracking has become much easier now, with all contracts and policies stored securely in one place. Instead of searching through disorganised folders or email threads, she can check whether an employee has signed a document in just a few clicks.
Plus, Emma says she can now access real-time data without any delays. Information that once meant juggling multiple spreadsheets is now at her fingertips, from employee headcount to monitoring open roles or managing internal approvals.
“I can see everything at a glance… it makes decision-making a whole lot easier and declutters my inbox.”
Likewise, for leaders in the business, all staff information and data are easily accessible and available at their fingertips now. A game changer in terms of making things easy internally.
The smarter way to grow a team
Recruitment has also become much more streamlined with Employment Hero’s Applicant Tracking System (ATS). Recruiters can collaborate directly on the platform to manage candidate applications, significantly reducing email traffic and improving communication and transparency between recruiters and their teams.
From recognition to retention
Engagement features also began to shift the company culture. Emma started using the Employment Hero’s Shout-outs feature to celebrate team contributions, and over time, the rest of the team followed suit. Team leaders have said they appreciate the automated reminders for special milestones like birthdays and work anniversaries because it’s a simple way to boost morale and strengthen team culture.
