Ngā Mātāpono – Principles

Mātāpono I: Kaupapa – Literacy Aotearoa will honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi by operating in accordance with Tino Rangatiratanga and guided by Manaaki Tangata.

Mātāpono II: Mission – Literacy Aotearoa is established to develop, promote and deliver accessible, quality literacy services designed to ensure the peoples of Aotearoa are critically literate and able to realise their full social, cultural and economic potential.

Pono: Sincerity

Being true and sincere in the work we do for the benefit of the people and communities we serve.

Manaaki Tangata: Respect

Of others and self-nurturing, all leadership and development capabilities to demonstrate the integrity of our values and the kaupapa and principles of Literacy Aotearoa.

Tika: Justice

Providing the inputs that achieve equitable outcomes of improved literacy and numeracy competencies and wellbeing for learners.

Mana: Honour

The respect and care shown for the organisation and others; our mana, our respective perspectives and our needs.

About Us – Our Logo

The Literacy Aotearoa logo was designed by Aroha Mitchell and was adapted in 2005 for branding purposes.

The concept of the design:

  • The Koru depicts growth, knowledge and lifelong learning.
  • The Whariki (weaving) depicts bringing people and learning philosophies together. It also depicts the sharing of knowledge.
  • The Open Book invites people to enjoy learning.
  • The Circular Sweep depicts the world encompassing and supporting the growth of knowledge.
  • Ranginui and Papatuanuku are depicted in the colours of blue and green.
