We spoke with Anna Swahn, Head of Business Services at Chesamel, about the difference Employment Hero has made since they adopted the platform in 2021.

Onboarding headaches

Onboarding new team members is an essential, but admin-heavy, part of growing a business. With HR and payroll setup, policies, training and induction to cover, many organisations find it difficult to streamline their process.

This can become especially tricky when, like Chesamel, you work in an industry where onboarding is core to your business.

“We had a lot of different platforms and our onboarding process in particular was complex and confusing,” says Anna. “It was, put your information here, do your training here. Do your OKRs here, 1:1s here. It was all over the place. We didn’t think that there was going to be a platform where we could do everything in one place.”

Platform fatigue

Whether it’s onboarding, offboarding or ongoing employment management – it’s easy for businesses to get weighed down with lots of different programs, each with varying functionality.

Using several platforms in different areas can cause ‘platform fatigue’. Anna explains this was a concern for some team members when they announced the business was switching to Employment Hero.

“Anyone who wasn’t excited was purely [feeling] platform fatigue. They were like, oh, here we go. Another platform. It wasn’t really until we had fully moved over and gotten rid of all the other ones that they were like, actually this is so much better.”

“I would say simplifying the process was probably the key thing for us,” says Anna.

“Definitely saving time and simplifying the process and saving money. It was the triple trifecta. I would say those were our key drivers.”

Team adoption from day one

Managing change in a business can be a daunting task. Will you have to eat up employee time with long training sessions? Will your team embrace the new technology? Will there be resistance around transforming processes?

Employment Hero was designed to be incredibly friendly, for both employers and employees. We want teams to be able to start using it from the word go.

“I think we basically only had positive feedback when we implemented Employment Hero,” says Anna.

“I would always have to hold a training session on how to use stuff prior to Employment Hero. I didn’t really even do that because it’s so self explanatory. Like, oh, how do I do annual leave? You go in and you press the request leave – easy! They felt it was unnecessary to even do a training session on it.”

Support along the way

New tech can be hard to introduce to a team, but it can be even harder to get everything implemented behind the scenes. Lots of support through the implementation process was a pleasant surprise for Anna.

“Something that wasn’t expected was the amount of support that we got from [the Employment Hero] team,” says Anna. “I definitely took up a lot of their time, but they were so accommodating and so happy to help and that was definitely unexpected. I was really happy with that.”
