The Australian Services Union Authorities & Services Branch covers Victoria and Tasmania. Our members hail from diverse industries including local government, social and community services, water, energy, transport, shipping, travel, info tech and – exclusive to Tasmania – airlines and clerical/administration.
The Australian Services Union (ASU) is one of Australia’s largest unions representing approximately 120,000 employees.

Position Objective
To contribute to the achievement of the ASU’s objectives by providing high quality and timely legal and/or industrial advice, assistance and representation
Overview of Duties
- Assess and make decisions about individual and collective legal/industrial matters
- Provide advice to members, Organisers and the Branch on industrial matters in a timely manner
- Prepare and run cases in courts and tribunals
- Assess competing priorities and make decisions about resource allocation to ensure statutory and agreed timelines are met
- Ad hoc tasks relating to the Union’s compliance and governance needs
- Represent members before Courts/Tribunals
- Proactively identify issues and bring them to the attention of the Manager and/or Officers of the Union
Key Responsibility & Areas
- Provision of research, analysis and advice on industrial and employment matters
- Liaison and consultation with external bodies regarding industrial matters
- Advocacy and representation in FWC and other employment related jurisdictions on industrial and employment matters
- Provision of high-level written and oral advice

Limits of authority
The position has authority to work autonomously within established guidelines with limited guidance / assistance
Key Selection Criteria
- Education/Experience – LLB preferred (or extensive industrial advocacy experience)
- Ability to analyse and interpret legislation and industrial instruments
- Strong communication skills including ability to adapt communications for the intended audience
- Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to interact cohesively with a wide variety of people
- Ability to work with limited direction and supervision
- Capacity to efficiently manage competing priorities, exercise judgment, and demonstrate initiative
