At Employment Hero, we love making employment easier and more rewarding for as many people as we can – so it should come as no surprise that we also use Employment Hero for our own HR, payroll, employee benefits and employee engagement! So yes, in case you were wondering – we drink the Kool-Aid.
As an employee accessing Employment Hero, there are a bunch of features that make my life easier. My favourite? Diverting my pay into 3 different bank accounts to optimise my savings – without having to have that awkward conversation with payroll about why I can’t be trusted to do it myself. In line with my struggles to be financially responsible (I’m working on it), Employment Hero’s discount marketplace, Discounts, has been an absolute lifesaver when it comes to making my paycheck go further.
If your employer is using Employment Hero and you’re not using Discounts, you’re missing out. There are thousands of everyday items on offer, including electronics, homewares, gift cards and discounts on subscription services like your gym membership. You can even get a better home loan in Discounts. One day, Annabel. One day…
So the discount marketplace is all well and good, but it’s not the only discount marketplace available. So what makes Discounts special? Hero Dollars. All the Hero Dollars. Reward and recognition is a huge part of what makes Employment Hero such a great place to work (remember the Kool-Aid?). We do this in lots of little ways (including HeroThanks!), but my favourite way to be rewarded is of course in monetary value. Enter Hero Dollars.
Think of the gifts or bonuses you might receive from your employer; employment anniversaries, bringing in a new client or a Christmas bonus. Hero Dollars make it easy for your employer to reward or recognise these events and as an employee, you can collate these Hero Dollars to buy something you actually want or need in Discounts.
One of our latest features, SuperHero Nominations, makes it even easier for employers to reward their staff for their hard work. Companies can enter their values into Employment Hero (for example Employment Hero has 5; ‘We Serve’, ‘We’re Bold and Ambitious’, ‘We Invent’, ‘Own It’ and ‘We Are One Team’). Any employee can nominate another for embodying these values and the nominated employee is rewarded with $10 Hero Dollars to spend in Discounts.
So Hero Dollars can be used in Discounts, but what does this look like in real life? I’m glad you asked! At the beginning of the year, it was a week before our next pay run and being right after Christmas, the purse strings were a bit tight. I used Hero Dollars on Woolworths gift cards and bought groceries for the next week. I can’t tell you what a relief it was to know I wouldn’t be eating tuna and rice for the next 7 days straight…
You can also use Hero Dollars in conjunction with other payment methods, like debit or credit cards, or InstaPay. So when I wanted Airpods earlier in the year, I paid for half of it using Hero Dollars and half of it on my debit card. Where else can you get 50% off your Airpods?
With literally thousands of items in Discounts, there are so many ways you can save in Discounts. Here’s how others have used their rewards in Discounts:
“I’ve started using the Hero Dollars earned through things like SuperHero Nominations and anniversary celebrations to purchase Coles gift cards, which I can then use to top up my Opal card for travel to and from work. Not only does this put a dent in my travel budget, it also means that by Employment Hero showing their appreciation for me, I can show my appreciation right back by showing up to work!”

“I love going to the movies, but it is usually so expensive in Australia. I wanted to have a look at how much this was going to cost me with the discount on Discounts and I actually realised I had $50 Hero Dollars from my employer from Christmas. This allowed me to go to the cinema twice with my partner completely for free!”
Veronica, Business Development Manager
“I usually use my Hero Dollars to buy Woolworths gift cards and top up my Opal card. It pretty much means free travel for the month and I can use that money elsewhere. I usually spend $30 a week on my commute, so depending on how many Hero Dollars I have, I save over $100 dollars a month. Or I use it to buy birthday presents for my family – they don’t need to know their $100 gift card didn’t cost me a cent!”
Nidhi, Customer Success Manager
“I have been wanting to try the Gold Class cinema for a while, so when I saw the discount through Discounts, I jumped at the chance! Watching Lion King, whilst being served wine and dinner – all paid by my employer with Hero Dollars – was simply divine!”
